House to vote on veterans’ cost-of-living adjustment legislation
S. 2562, as amended, the Veterans’ Compensation
Cost- of-Living Adjustment Act of 2006
Washington, D.C. –The House anticipates that S. 2562, the Veterans’
Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2006, will be considered
on the House floor tonight. S. 2562 will provide, effective December 1,
2006, a cost-of-living adjustment to the rates of disability
compensation for veterans with service-connected disabilities and the
rates of dependency and indemnity compensation paid to certain spouses
and dependent children of service-disabled veterans.
S. 2562 is anticipated to pass the House this
weekend by unanimous consent and will be sent to the president for his
signature.
“This is one of the more important pieces of legislation the Veterans’
Affairs Committee brings to the floor each year,” said Chairman Steve
Buyer (R-Ind.).
“Each year since 1976, Congress has provided a cost-of-living adjustment
to the benefits provided to our nation’s disabled veterans and their
survivors. I am proud that we will be able to deliver this important
increase to our veterans,” said Subcommittee on Disability and
Assistance Chairman Jeff Miller (R-Fla.).
Note: The Congressional Budget Office is projecting a 2.6 percent
increase.
However, it may be higher or lower depending on
changes in the Consumer Price Index.
The exact percentage will be calculated as of
October 1, 2006, and the COLA will go into effect on December 1, 2006.
