HOUSE VETERANS’ PANEL WELCOMES CONGRESSMAN SALAZAR

Washington, DC – House Democrats have appointed Congressman John T. Salazar (D-CO) to serve on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee.  Congressman Lane Evans, the Ranking Democratic Member on the Committee, said: "Since the first day he walked into these halls, actually well before, John has shown a keen interest in veterans and military issues, and I welcome him to the Committee.”

Congressman Salazar’s district in rural Colorado is home to more than 70,000 veterans.  An Army veteran (1973– 1976) with a son serving in the National Guard, Salazar’s understanding of veterans’ issues is grounded in both personal and professional experience.

“There is no greater honor than serving your country,” said Salazar. “Our veterans and troops are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. But for far too long, the health and well being of our nation’s veterans and military retirees have been treated as an afterthought. In my first year here in Congress, I have been dedicated to fighting for real health care benefits for veterans in rural Colorado. As a new Member of the Committee, I pledge to continue the fight to make sure we truly honor the sacrifices of all our service men and women.”

While serving in the Colorado State House, Congressman Salazar was awarded “Legislator of the Year” by the United Veterans Committee of Colorado.  In his first year in Congress, Congressman Salazar was selected to lead the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ Veterans Task Force, which was created to recognize the contributions and unique needs of Hispanics in the Armed Forces.

Said Evans: “John will bring an important perspective on the issues facing rural veterans and military retirees.  The Committee has a great deal of important work to complete, and I am certain he will hit the ground running and contribute to our progress.”
