Tammy Duckworth Meets Chairman Akaka to Discuss Her Pending VA Nomination

McKinley High, University of Hawaii graduate’s confirmation hearing set for next Wednesday

By Jesse Broder Van Dyke

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI), Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, met today with L. Tammy Duckworth, President Barack Obama’s nominee to be the Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Akaka will chair Duckworth’s nomination hearing on Wednesday, April 1, 2009.

“Tammy brings youth and innovation to this challenging post. With her
experience helping veterans in Illionis she knows how to reach out to states, and she is motivated to improve the system by her first hand experience as a wounded warrior following combat in Iraq,” said Chairman Akaka.

Ms. Duckworth’s family moved to Hawaii when she was 16.

She graduated from McKinley High School in 1985 and the University of Hawaii in 1989.

She received a Masters degree from George Washington University.

She deployed to Iraq in 2004 with the Illinois National Guard.

After being injured in a rocket propelled grenade attack on her helicopter, she recovered at Walter Reed Medical Center.

She was appointed Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs in 2006.
