Legislation would improve care for soldiers exposed to toxins

WTHR Indianapolis



Washington - Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh is introducing legislation that would improve medical care for US soldiers exposed to toxic chemicals during wartime military service.

Eyewitness News' special report The Hidden Enemy revealed that National Guard soldiers from Indiana were exposed to the deadly carcinogen sodium dichromate while guarding a water treatment plant in Iraq.

Two soldiers were diagnosed with cancer after returning from Iraq.

Other soldiers are suing the military contractor in charge of the facility.

Bayh's legislation would guarantee lifelong care at VA medical facilities.

Their proposed VA medical registry is modeled after the government's response to the Agent Orange exposure during the Vietnam War.
