FILNER RENEWS PUSH FOR WORLD WAR II MERCHANT MARINE

PENSIONS -- "The Merchants Mariners were dealt a grave

injustice at the close of World War II when they were

denied veteran status and benefits."

This argument has been going on for years.

And, previous legislation has gone nowhere.

But, Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA), Chairman of the House Committee Affairs, is bound and determined to get pensions for the Merchant Marine.  Just like he is pushing for pensions for non-resident, non-citizen Filipino veterans.

Your thoughts?

Filner Reintroduces Belated Thank You to the Merchant Mariners of World War II Act

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Bob Filner reintroduced a bill to honor American heroes from World War II. The Belated Thank You to the Merchant Mariners of World War II Act, H.R. 23, will provide a new benefit to Merchant Mariners who served between December 7, 1941 and December 31, 1946. Qualifying Merchant Mariners would receive monthly payments of $1,000 out of a newly established Merchant Mariner Equity Compensation Fund.

“The Merchants Mariners were dealt a grave injustice at the close of World War II when they were denied veteran status and benefits,” stated Chairman Filner. “This bill helps rectify that wrong, and shows the Merchant Mariners that their bravery is still appreciated. Throughout World War II the merchant mariners played an essential role while suffering higher casualty rates than any other armed branch of service. Merchant Mariners courageously transported goods, materials, and personnel to various theaters of war. I am truly grateful for the services that these individuals provided during World War II, and I will fight to have this bill passed into law. Our entire nation needs to give them the thanks they deserve.”

The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
