U.S.
Attorney: Man Never Earned Silver Star
http://www.kcra.com/news/21891497/detail.html
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A man known as the unofficial caretaker of
the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial pleaded guilty to wearing
a Silver Star that was never awarded to him.
Kenneth Jerome Nelson, 60, claimed he was awarded the honor while
he was a Marine in Vietnam, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney
Camil A. Skipper.
Nelson also claimed he earned three Purple Hearts, including one
he claimed to have earned after stepping on a spike while carrying
a wounded soldier for 26 miles.
He never served in any combat role, according to the U.S.
Attorney's Office, and didn't receive any decorations or medals.
Nelson is scheduled to be sentenced March 1, 2010, and faces up to
a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
