VA Awards $1.3 Million for Wisconsin State
Veterans Cemetery

WASHINGTON -- Continuing its mission of providing a final resting place
for Wisconsin veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has
announced a $1.3 million grant to increase the capacity of the Southern
Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove.
“This grant will ensure that burial of cremated remains is an option for
Wisconsin’s veterans,” said Dr. James B. Peake, Secretary of
Veterans
Affairs. “We are proud to partner with the Wisconsin Department of
Veterans Affairs to provide memorial services.”
The grant will fund a second 1,792-niche columbarium for cremated remains
and infrastructure such as landscaping and irrigation.
VA’s State Cemetery Grants Program complements VA’s 125 national
cemeteries across the country. The program helps states establish new
state veterans cemeteries and expand or improve existing cemeteries. To
date, the VA program has helped establish 72 state veterans cemeteries in
38 states and U.S. territories that provided more than 23,000 burials in
fiscal year 2007. Since the program began in 1980, VA has awarded 172
grants totaling $344 million.

VA Awards $2.3 Million for Nevada State Veterans
Cemetery

Grant will improve Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery
WASHINGTON – Continuing its mission of providing a final resting place for
Nevada veterans that honors their service, the Department of Veterans
Affairs (VA) has announced a $2.3 million grant to improve the Southern
Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.
“This grant will help to improve memorial services to Nevada veterans,”
said Dr. James B. Peake, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “We are proud to
partner with the Nevada Office of Veterans Services.”
The cemetery primarily serves 180,000 veterans and their dependents who
live in the vicinity of Las Vegas and surrounding areas in southern
Nevada. The grant will fund construction of a new maintenance facility and
a service yard on three acres. It will also pay for design and
construction administration and associated infrastructure such as roads,
utilities, landscaping and irrigation.
Nevada has one other state veterans cemetery in Fernley.

VA Awards Grant to New Hampshire State Cemetery

Grant Will Ensure Continued Cremation Burials
WASHINGTON – Continuing its mission of providing a final resting place for
New Hampshire veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has
announced a $937,000 grant to increase the capacity of the New Hampshire
State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen for cremation burial.
“By funding an additional columbarium for the cemetery, this grant ensures
the continuity of memorial services for those who choose cremation
burial,” said Dr. James B. Peake, Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
The cemetery serves 120,000 veterans and their eligible dependents who
live in New Hampshire. The grant funds construction of a 1,600-niche
columbarium and infrastructure such as roads, utilities, landscaping and
irrigation. It also pays for design and construction and administrative
costs. Four previous VA grants since 1997 have paid for columbaria at the
cemetery.

VA Awards $2.9 Million for Nebraska State
Veterans Cemetery

Grant establishes new veterans cemetery in Alliance
WASHINGTON – Ensuring that Nebraska veterans have a final resting place to
honor their service to the nation, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
has announced a $2.9 million grant to establish the Nebraska Veterans
Cemetery in Alliance.
“A new state veterans’ cemetery in western Nebraska will greatly expand
the opportunity for veterans to be buried in a place that commemorates
their sacrifice,” said Dr. James B. Peake, Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
“We are proud to partner with the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs
to establish this cemetery.”
The 21-acre cemetery will be developed in phases, each designed to
accommodate 10 years of burials and serve 6,000 veterans and eligible
dependents in western Nebraska. The first phase includes an initial
12-acre development that will provide 1,372 full-casket burial sites and
1,177 in-ground cremation burial sites. The grant will provide 100 percent
of the funding for construction of the full-casket and cremation burial
areas and supporting infrastructure to include roads, utilities,
landscaping and irrigation. The grant also includes design and
construction administration costs

VA Awards $4.2 Million for Maine State Veterans
Cemetery

WASHINGTON – To ensure that Maine veterans have a final resting place to
honor their service to the nation, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
has announced a $4.2 million grant to establish the Southern Maine
Veterans Cemetery in Springvale.
“We are proud to partner with the Maine Department of Veterans Affairs to
establish this cemetery,” said Dr. James B. Peake, Secretary of Veterans
Affairs. “The veterans of southern Maine deserve the honor of a veteran’s
burial close to home, and this new state cemetery ensures that honor.”
The 95-acre cemetery will be developed in phases, each designed to provide
10 years of burials. The first phase includes an initial 12-acre
development that will provide 3,196 full-casket burial sites and 1,298
in-ground cremation burial sites. The grant will provide 100 percent of
the funding for construction of the main entrance, full-casket and
cremation burial areas, an assembly area, maintenance building and
supporting infrastructure to include roads, utilities, landscaping and
irrigation. The grant also includes design costs and equipment to operate
the cemetery.
Three other Maine state veterans cemeteries, two located in Augusta and
one in Caribou, also received federal assistance through VA state cemetery
grants.

VA Awards $2.7 Million for Hawaii State Veterans
Cemetery

Grant will expand the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kona
WASHINGTON – Continuing its mission of providing a final resting place for
Hawaii veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced a
$2.7 million grant to expand the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kona, on
the Big Island of Hawaii.
“This grant will ensure that Hawaii veterans continue to have the honor of
a veteran’s burial without leaving their own island,” said Dr. James B.
Peake, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “This grant will help to keep that
option available to serve the needs of Kona’s veterans well into the
future.”
The 62-acre cemetery provides service for 7,000 veterans on Hawaii. The
expansion will develop 288 in-ground cremation burial sites and 192
columbaria niches. The grant will provide 100 percent of the funding for
the construction of in-ground cremation gravesites, columbaria, a storage
facility with a fenced service yard, a road, landscaping, a memorial walk,
an assembly area, a committal shelter, and supporting infrastructure to
include utilities, landscaping and irrigation. The grant also includes
design costs and equipment to operate the cemetery.
Hawaii Island has two other state veterans cemeteries, both in Hilo. The
state of Hawaii has eight state veterans’ cemeteries. The other cemeteries
are located in Kaneohe on Oahu, Hanapepe on Kauai, Makawao on Maui,
Hoolehua on Molokai and Lanai City on Lanai.
