PRESS RELEASE

Obama Win Heralds New Era for Federal Employees

AFGE Looks Forward to Restoring America's Promise

WASHINGTON,/PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) today celebrates the historic election of Senator Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. In response, AFGE National President John Gage issued the following statement:

On November 4th America made clear its desire for change by choosing Barack Obama to take this nation in a new direction. Throughout the last eight years the American people have experienced economic downturn, increasing unemployment, soaring energy costs, and a declining international perception of this nation. Yesterday Americans collectively decided to turn the page on the Bush/McCain era and its failed policies. With President-elect Obama in office, AFGE is confident that the new Congress will be able to enact laws that will right the direction of the country.

Early in the election season, Obama met with AFGE leadership on several occasions, during which he signified his support for organized labor and federal workers. Obama has been vocal in his commitment to fully fund and staff the Social Security Administration, Bureau of Prisons, and the Department of Veterans Affairs; allow for collective bargaining rights at TSA; and honor the inherently government work of federal employees. We believe President-elect Obama respects federal employees and will provide the resources needed to tackle the critical challenges and current obstacles in order to address the needs of the American people.

AFGE will continue to provide a voice for its members, federal employees, and working families by elevating our issues and concerns with the Obama administration. AFGE congratulates President - and Vice-President-elects Obama and Biden and looks forward to a productive relationship.

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 600,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia.
