Red Cross Encourages Donations in Honor of Veterans

Each year, Veterans Day is observed on November 11 as a way to honor veterans in the United States for their service to the nation.

This year, as one way to honor military veterans and active military personnel, the American Red Cross encourages eligible individuals to take the time to schedule an appointment to donate blood.

First started as a relief effort to provide lifesaving plasma and blood for soldiers during World War II, the American Red Cross Blood Services now collects and distributes nearly half of the nation’s civilian blood supply, serving more than 3,000 hospitals in the United States with the blood products patients need.

The Red Cross supplies blood to many Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospitals where veterans receive blood transfusions for cancer treatment, cardiac surgery and elective surgery.

Cancer treatment can require 10 to 20 units of red cells and 10 to 50 units of platelets per patient.

Open heart surgery can require between two and six units of red cells, platelets and plasma.

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for veterans and patients.

All those who are eligible to donate are urged to do so as soon as possible.

To donate blood you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health and provide a valid photo ID upon donation.

For information on blood drives call the American Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or visit www.givebloodtoday.org .
