Fake grenades cause scare at veterans’ hospital
Lebanon Daily News
Portions of the Lebanon VA Medical Center campus in South Lebanon Township
were blocked off yesterday after two inert “dummy” grenades were found.
The
first grenade was found by a patient about 11 a.m. in the parking lot of
Building 17, and police and fire police were called to block off the
parking lot.
The lot was reopened about 45 minutes later.
The second device was found about 11:50 a.m. in a bathroom in Building 18.
The building, which mostly houses administrative
offices, outpatient clinics and behavioral-health services, was evacuated
and searched for additional grenades.
It was reopened about 1 p.m.
Hospital
spokesman Norman Faas Jr. said it is unclear if the same person placed
both grenades.
“One would deduce as much ... but I don’t know for sure if the same
individual is responsible for both of them,” he said.
Faas said the grenades are made of metal and look like real grenades but
have a hole drilled through them.
They are typically used for training purposes.
Both grenades are in the custody of VA police, who are investigating the
incident, Faas said.
