Mobile service helps veterans sort out benefit issues

Filed by Melanie Woodrow

UNDATED, VA. (MyFox Hampton Roads) -- From its size to its amenities, everything about the Winebego says road trip, but it's a journey unlike any other.

"It is an amazing experience, the fact that we are able to help so many people," said Stacy Pyszora.

She's one of several law students from the University of Detroit - Mercy School of Law [ UDM ]. They've been traveling across the United States since January, helping thousands of low income veterans who face federal benefits issues.

Today's destination is VFW Post 3160.

"It really has given us an opportunity to reach out to people that can't come to where we're at, so we go to them and we bring the office," said Pyszora.

This is her fifth trip with Project Salute. The RV is even wheelchair accessible.

Purcey Cagg and his wife Marquetta looked to the group for some help. Marquetta, a former Army Reservist got disappointing news.

"As a reservist I get nothing, I can be buried, but that's about it," she said.

Her husband, a former Marine fared better.

"They're going to help me with all the benefits that I don't know about," he said.

Project Salute will leave Hampton Roads on Thursday, but students will be taking veterans cases with them and assigning them to volunteer attorneys.

"I think this is wonderful. I wish I had known about this six or seven years ago," said Cagg.

Even though Marquetta doesn't qualify for assistance, she says she's glad she finally got some answers.

"I appreciate it, I told them that too. I really do appreciate it," she said.
