Serious Damage to Veterans Hospital in Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA, Wash.-- One of the places in Walla Walla that was hit the hardest by the wind storm was the Veterans Medical Center.

The winds caused significant damage to roofs and trees.

At least three buildings were hit and a tree actually fell on top of one of them, forcing staff to evacuate Friday.

Early on Saturday several members of the hospital staff were at the scene cleaning up and planning emergency operations.

They say the damage has caught them by surprise.

"We kind of felt displaced, we spend so much time here and you know it's like our second home was taken from us and we weren't sure what was going to happen, and where we were going to go," said Patty Strange, a VA Medical Center staff member.

Another staff member was surprised to see her car caught under a fallen tree.

The hospital has continued to care for patients without interruption, and the chief of staff says luckily no injuries have been reported.

The hospital is still trying to determine how much it will cost to repair all the damaged buildings.
