Exhibit recalls WWII POWs

A World War II exhibit will be at the Edwardsville Public Library on Sunday.

The exhibit is titled "Behind Barbed Wire: Midwest POWs in Nazi Germany."

A non-profit educational organization called Traces created the exhibit.

Traces collected stories of people from the Midwest and Germany or Austria who encountered each other during World War II and uses the exhibit to preserve and present those stories.

The program includes artifacts, narrative texts and multi-media displays.

Reference Librarian Judy Thompson said the exhibit is traveling across the Midwest via a school bus and the bus will be outside the Edwardsville library from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

She said when the library staff learned about the bus being in the area, they agreed it would be an excellent opportunity for the community to learn more about World War II.

"We thought it was worth while on a lot of counts," Thompson said.

She said the display focuses on American POWs from the Midwest and is an educational tool about the war.

"We think it is important to keep lessons of World War II alive for future generations," Thompson said.

She said the exhibit will bring to life the experiences of the war and honor those who served.

Thompson said the library is excited to be able to be part of the bus tour.

"We are extremely happy to have it here. We have heard so many good things about it," Thompson said. "We really hope people come out here and have an opportunity to see it."

In addition, Thompson said the VFW and American Legion are also glad to have the bus coming to town.

She said the VFW will have a table set up outside or inside the library depending on the weather.

The Edwardsville Public Library is located at 112 South Kansas.

The bus will be parked on Kansas Street in front of the library.
