DEMOCRATIC PRESS RELEASE

September 15, 2008

The Veterans’ Affairs Committees of the House and Senate Hold a Joint Hearing for The American Legion to Present Legislative Priorities

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C.– On Thursday, September 11, 2008, Bob Filner (D-CA), Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, and Daniel Akaka (D-HI), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, held a joint hearing to receive the legislative agenda of The American Legion.

“There are hundreds of thousands of new veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan and we must take care of these young men and women as they return home,” stated Chairman Filner. “But, at the same time we have older veterans, whether it’s World War II, Vietnam, Korea, Desert Shield, or Desert Storm. Their needs are increasing, so there is this dual pressure on the VA, and we must care for ALL of our veterans.”

National Commander David K. “Dave” Rehbein briefed the Committee on the essential health care services the Department of Veterans Affairs provides, and offered valuable recommendations. “By working together, The American Legion and the members of both the House and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committees have made considerable progress in recent years,” testified Commander Rehbein. “The process of providing adequate and compassionate services to our veterans is, as we all know, continuous. We must stay on top of the changes in health care, in technology, and foremost, among the veterans we serve.”

The legislative priorities of the veterans’ service organization were presented by Director Steve Robertson and Chairman Jimmie Foster of the National Legislative Commission and Chairman K. Robert Lewis and Director Peter Gaytan of the National Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Commission, in addition to National Commander Rehbein.

“I would like to congratulate Dave Rehbein as the newly elected National Commander, as well as all of the other incoming National Officers, and I look forward to working with you while we support our nation’s veterans,” said Chairman Filner. “The American Legion has a strong tradition of assisting our veterans, whether that is working to improve access to health care, ensuring timely adjudication of disability claims, or improving educational benefits or employment services.”
