Man Gets Life for VA Hospital Shooting

Fayetteville Man Charged In Fatal Shooting At VA Hospital

Fayetteville — A Fayetteville man who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in a fatal shooting at the Veterans Affairs Medical Hospital in Fayetteville was sentenced to life in prison this week.

In April, Arthur James Charland admitted to killing his girlfriend, Linda Faye Owens, on Dec. 12, 2005, at the hospital pharmacy, where she worked as a pharmacist.

Investigators said he concealed a shotgun inside Christmas wrapping paper to get the weapon into the hospital.

Charland, a pharmacy technician, told authorities that he had been dating Owens for 11 years and that she wanted to end the relationship.

Man sentenced to life in VA shooting

A staff report

The man who shot his longtime lover to death at the Fayetteville Veterans Affairs Medical Center in 2005 will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Arthur James Charland of Fayetteville was sentenced to life Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Greenville. He had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in April.

On Dec. 12, 2005, Charland concealed a shotgun in Christmas wrapping, walked into the pharmacy where Linda Owens worked and shot her to death because she wanted to end their relationship. Owens, 39, was a co-worker whom Charland had a decade-long extramarital affair.

In the plea, Charland admitted that the killing was premeditated and with malice.

The VA hospital heightened security after the shooting and reiterated to employees its policies about disruptive behavior and dating co-workers.

Owens was a pharmacist and Charland was a pharmacy technician, which is a subordinate position.
