Women focus of Veterans Day Parade
By CHANTAL ESCOTO
The Leaf-Chronicle
Women who have served will be the focus of this year's
Clarksville-Montgomery County Veterans Day Parade to be held Nov. 10.
The parade's theme, "Honoring all who served, and a tribute to all women
veterans," was chosen because it falls on the 10th Anniversary of the
Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington Cemetery.
The WIMSA is the only major national memorial to honor women veterans of
all branches of service since the Revolutionary War.
Stacey Hopwood of the local Veterans Service Organization is helping to
organize the parade this year. She said she's excited about the theme
because it recognizes women who served in the U.S. military.
"I talk to women that served and because they didn't serve in war they
think they aren't a veteran," Hopwood said, who served in the Marine Corps
and is a member of the Women Veterans Network.

The VSO is still searching for a parade grand
marshal, preferably a high ranking female veteran or active duty service
member.
"This is a big deal because it's the Clarksville-Montgomery County
Veterans Day parade. It shows they think enough about us and to take
notice."
Women Veterans Program Manager MaryAnn Woodward-Smith will be one of the
panelists judging the floats in Clarksville. She said getting the word out
about women service members, their sacrifices, and the benefits they are
entitled to is always positive.
"I'm just thrilled," Woodward-Smith said. "The whole part of the Women
Veterans Network is to reach out to the community and let people know that
women who served are veterans, too."
More than 2.5 million women have served in the military since the
Revolutionary War.
There are 60,000 women veterans in Tennessee and Kentucky and 21 percent
of all recruits are females.
The Women Veterans Network of the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System
was established in 1997 and presently has more than 400 active members.
