Syracuse hospital worker sentenced for intending to sell crack on the job

News release from the US Attorney's Office

Glenn T. Suddaby, United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York, announces the sentencing today in U.S. District Court in Utica, New York, of Darrell S. Mosely, Sr., 63, formerly of 319 Glenwood Ave., Syracuse, New York, in connection with his drug trafficking activities at the VA Hospital in Syracuse, New York.

Mosely was sentenced to five (5) years imprisonment, followed by 8 years of supervised release following his imprisonment.

Mosely previously pled guilty to possessing with intent to distribute cocaine base (crack).

Mosely worked in the laundry department at the VA Hospital since 1992.

He was arrested at the VA Hospital on May 5, 2006 after a search of his person revealed 22 baggies of crack cocaine in a black pouch he was wearing around his waist and $2,031 in his pocket.

A simultaneous search of his home at 319 Glenwood Avenue revealed, among other things, the following: (1) approximately four baggies of cocaine base (crack) from his bedroom that was packaged in the same manner as the drugs seized from Mosely at the VA Hospital; (2) 2 shotguns (1 Remington and 1 Harrington & Richards) and 1 Remington rifle, all seized from Mosely's bedroom closet; (3) one loaded Raven Arms .25 caliber pistol, seized from a lock box in Mosely's bedroom; (4) 3 digital scales consistent with the types used by drug traffickers; (5) 2 small notebooks from his bedroom night stand that appeared to contain detailed ledgers of his drug customers, including dollar amounts next to the names listed; (6) drug packaging paraphernalia; (7) miscellaneous drug paraphernalia; (8) five DVD players still in their boxes and (9) four large screen televisions still in their boxes.

The DVD players and TV's were purchased at the VA Hospital's Canteen Store and given to Mosely as payments for drug debts.

As part of his guilty plea, Mosely admitted that he had been selling crack cociane at the VA Hospital for at least the five months leading up to his arrest.

At his sentencing hearing today, Mosely apologized to the VA hospital staff for his criminal conduct.

This prosecution resulted from an investigation undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Security Department at the VA Hospital.
