VA Worker Pleads Guilty To Taking Bribe,
Filing False Return

The Associated Press

A Connecticut-based supervisor for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs pleaded guilty in federal court today to one count each of bribery and filing a false income tax return, federal officials said.

Kevin J. Malarney, 55, a construction and maintenance supervisor at the VA facility in West Haven, admitted he steered construction, maintenance and supply contracts to two unnamed businesses, U.S. Attorney Kevin J. O'Connor said.

In return, the companies paid his mortgage, automobile loan payments, student loans, insurance policy premiums, credit card bills and other personal expenses, O'Connor said.

In his plea, Malarney also admitted he filed a false 2004 income tax return that failed to include those payments as part of his income, O'Connor said.

Malarney, of Branford, faces up to 18 years in prison and up to $350,000 in fines when he is sentenced Sept. 7 in U.S. District Court in Hartford.
