VFW helps local veterans learn, acquire computers

FORT THOMAS - Some local veterans are booting up new computers with the
help of a donation from the Ohio Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
The organization donated $20,000 to the Cincinnati VA Medical Center's
Veterans Activity Treatment Center (VTAC) to purchase 40 home computers
for veterans who recently completed an eight-week computer class.
VTAC is a mental health program for veterans in need of structured
activities to function at their highest level.
The donated computers will give veterans who graduated from the computer
class the ability to use those skills at home on their own computers.
Fort Thomas resident and Vietnam veteran Charles E. Benton took the
computer course and said his new computer is already hooked up and ready
to go.
"This is very exciting," Benton said. "I just started to get online and
now I'm learning how to e-mail my family."
Benton said he will share his computer knowledge with others at the VA.
The VFW worked to secure donations from various local VFW chapters
during the past year with the goal of being able to provide each
computer course graduate with a personal home computer.
