193,000 Jobs Available for Vets to Choose From
The federal government is facing a potential crisis. Thousands of
federal employees will retire, leaving a massive hole in the federal
workforce. In fact, a Partnership for a Public Service report — Where
the Jobs Are: Mission Critical Opportunities for America — projects that
the federal government needs to hire nearly 193,000 new workers for
vacant jobs in the following fields: security, medical and public
health, accounting, engineering, and program management/analysis and
administration.
Filling these "mission critical jobs" is a top priority. Over the next
two years the federal government will increase hiring, which includes
62,863 jobs in the security and law enforcement field, according the
report.
The report also found that government needs to fill the following
positions:
* 23,000 nurses and nursing assistants, along with physicians,
pharmacists and occupational therapists to fill 35,350 medical and
public health jobs.
* The Department of Agriculture projects 2,462 hires and the Department
of Homeland Security expects to hire 1,000 workers.
* Transportation security officers for 22,329 jobs at the Department of
Homeland Security.
* More than 8,300 contracting experts at the Department of Defense,
Homeland Security, and other agencies.
* Accountants, tax examiners, auditors, and budget and financial
analysts to fill 21,248 jobs at the IRS, Department of Treasury and
other agencies.
* Internet Technology (IT) experts for at least 11,562.
* Attorneys, paralegals and other legal positions to fill 9,691 jobs at
the Department of Treasury and other agencies.
* Air traffic controllers to fill 15,004 jobs at the Department of
Transportation over the next 10 years.
Many of these positions are perfect for former servicemembers. Veterans
have the necessary skills and background to fill any of the open
positions in the federal workforce, all former servicemembers need to do
is apply.
"This report confirms that the job opportunities are there. People just
need to seize them," said Max Stier, president of the Partnership for
Public Service, in an OPS press release.
Additionally, the federal government offers recruitment bonuses,
retention incentives, relocation incentives and graduate school
scholarships. Jobs are available all of the world — 50,000 jobs are
abroad — and throughout the United States.
If you're a veteran or transitioning out of the service, a job in the
federal government is waiting for you.
