DoD to begin clinical IT project

Healthcare IT News
By Bernie Monegain, Editor

CHANTILLY, VA – The Department of Defense is poised to deploy new clinical information technology aimed at enabling the sharing of patient data with Veterans Affairs.

The department signed a $10.3 million contract with defense contractor Northrop Grumman for the work, which calls for rolling out a clinical and health data repository.

Under the agreement Northrop Grumman’s IT sector will provide systems engineering and integration, information assurance and security, configuration management, technical support, and system enhancement and maintenance.

Work will be conducted in Chantilly, Va. , South Jordan, Utah and various Defense Department and VA medical facilities nationwide.

The contract has two one-year options.

The initiative will connect the Defense Department’s electronic health record system, AHLTA, and the VA’s patient record system, VistA.

Northrop Grumman has supported the AHLTA system as the primary systems integrator and developer since 1999.

Last March, the Department of Defense awarded the company a $67.7 million contract to provide security accreditation and information assurance, management information services, commercial-off-the-shelf product monitoring and configuration management support to AHLTA.

Northrop Grumman is also one of four IT companies leading consortia tasked with developing a nationwide health information network, or NHIN.

The other lead companies are Accenture, Computer Sciences Corp. and IBM.

Northrop Grumman Corporation is a $30 billion global defense and technology company whose 120,000 employees provide systems, products, and solutions in information and services, electronics, aerospace and shipbuilding to government and commercial customers worldwide.
