Handicapped group, U-M to go to trial
over stadium renovation

Marisa Schultz
The Detroit News

The Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America and the University of Michigan will head to trial over whether U-M's new Big House renovation is wheelchair accessible.

The veterans filed suit against U-M earlier this year, claiming the $226 million renovation of Michigan Stadium will not meet federal Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines.

There is not enough wheelchair seating and there is not enough location options, they claim.

U-M has maintained the renovation will meet federal code.

The two parties had tried to work toward a settlement, but no agreement could be reached after a court status conference on Wednesday.

"It's been determined that this is a matter that can't be settled and let's go to trial," said Richard Bernstein, attorney for the veterans.

A trial will likely take place in the fall, he said.
