Army stress cases double

The number of British soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder has doubled in a year.

And the statistic applies just to soldiers still on active duty. The total figure is likely to be even higher because, unlike the United States, the MoD has no screening system for veterans or reservists.

In a week when the MOD is debating whether to send Prince Harry to Iraq and the Americans are debating whether to stay at all, our foreign affairs correspondent Nick Paton Walsh has this exclusive report.

 

'The government doesn't really know'

The truth about PTSD is that the government doesn't really know how many people are affected. They can keep tabs on people still serving and do something if they're obviously having problems.

But veterans and reservists - a lot of the people who served in Iraq - don't have any official support structure. They don't get screened - a version of which happens in the USA. And when they have a problem, they have to go to their GP, who, with the best will in the world, won't always get it.
