Remembering Pearl Harbor Day

Washington D.C. — Sixty seven years ago today, on December 7, 1941, a tranquil Hawaiian morning turned to chaos as a vicious sneak attack was launched at Pearl Harbor. 2,403 American lives were taken, our Pacific Fleet was crippled, and the and the world plunged into a war in the Pacific.

The nation’s grief quickly turned to resolve as the images of the twisted metal and wreckage reached the mainland. During the ensuing years of war, every citizen stood strong in support of our cause. Young men and women enlisted in droves while newspapers and other media sources heralded each victory and triumph of our armed forces. As a result of the sacrifices and efforts of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, the world was once again saved from the boot of oppression.

“It is appropriate that we take a moment today to reflect on the heavy price that has been paid by our veterans. Even as we prepare to celebrate the holiday season, members of the armed forces continue to shield us from those who despise the freedom and liberty we cherish. It is heartening to know that the same spirit and resolve that carried our nation through Pearl Harbor, is with us now as we are engaged in the Global War on Terror”, said Steve Buyer (R-Ind.), ranking member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
