House Passes Three Bills to Improve Veterans’ Benefits

Chairman Filner Says the Bills are the First Step in an Ambitious Agenda for House Veterans’ Affairs Committee

Washington, D.C. – The Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Bob Filner (D-CA), brought three bills to the House floor that would improve veterans’ benefits. The House passed the following bills: the Joshua Omvig Veterans Suicide Prevention Act, the Dr. James Allen Veteran Vision Equity Act, and the Veterans Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2007.

1. H.R. 327 – to direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to develop and implement a comprehensive program designed to reduce the incidence of suicide among veterans.

2. H.R. 797 – to amend title 38, United States Code, to improve compensation benefits for veterans in certain cases of impairment of vision involving both eyes, and for other purposes.

3. H.R. 1284 – to increase, effective as of December 1, 2007, the rates of compensation for veterans with service-connected disabilities and the rates of dependency and indemnity compensation for the survivors of certain disabled veterans.

“This Congress is working hard to keep the promises that have been made to our veterans,” said Chairman Filner. “My job is to get legislation that will have a positive impact on our veterans and their dependents enacted into law as fast as possible and these bills are a great first step.”
