DEMOCRATIC PRESS RELEASE

March 1, 2007

House and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committees Hold Joint Hearing

Veterans Group Disabled American Veterans Presents Legislative Agenda

Washington, D.C. – The House Veterans’ Affairs Committee led by Chairman Bob Filner (D-CA), and the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee led by Chairman Daniel Akaka (D-HI), held a joint hearing to receive the legislative presentation of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

“Joint hearings are a long tradition of the Veterans’ Affairs Committees and I am pleased to be able to restart this tradition which was abolished under the Republican majority,” said Chairman Filner. “The information provided by the DAV is important as the committee analyzes the budget and addresses the pressing needs of veterans.”

National Commander of the Disabled American Veterans, Bradley S. Barton, testified that “we believe funding for veterans benefits and health care services should be a top priority for Congress and the Administration as a continuing cost of our national defense. As a nation, we must be willing to bear the costs of providing special benefits to such a unique group – those men and women who were willing, on behalf of all Americans, to serve our country and fight our wars to preserve our cherished freedoms and democratic values.”

The House and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committees have scheduled future joint hearings to receive legislative presentations from Veterans of Foreign Wars, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Jewish War Veterans of the United States, Blinded Veterans Association, AMVETS, Ex-POWs, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Vietnam Veterans of America and the Fleet Reserve Association.
